Apple's first foldable iPhone needs a different kind of case, and Apple already has an official option built specifically around its new form factor. But there's one thing to consider - the official first-party iPhone Duo case is nearly $80.

As an official product, this is no surprise.

Still, the price can be a lot to spend on a relatively standard iPhone Duo case, so you might as well check if it suits your style and needs.

To be exact, Apple's official iPhone Duo Case costs $79 and is specifically designed around the shape and folding mechanism of the iPhone Duo.

Apple describes the case as thin and light, with protection wrapping around both sides of the device. It is made from polycarbonate with a matte coating and has built-in magnets for MagSafe and wireless charging.

Here is what stands out.

Instead of trying to make one flexible case stretch around the entire foldable, Apple uses two separate pieces.

One section protects the rear half of the phone, while the other surrounds the outer display. This lets the iPhone Duo open and close without having a thick case interfering with its folding mechanism.

Apple has kept the color selection equally simple.

The official Apple Duo case is available in just two colors:

Sand gives the phone a softer neutral look, while Navy Blue is the darker option for anyone who wants something more understated. 

The limited selection won't satisfy everyone, especially if you like changing cases to match your outfit or other iPhone Duo accessories. But the neutral colors fit the minimalist approach Apple is going for.

The two-piece construction leaves the important areas of the phone accessible.

You don't need to remove the iPhone Duo cover every time you charge the phone, use its buttons, or access its ports. The case is shaped around the Duo rather than trying to cover every part of the device.

That's particularly important for a foldable because even a small amount of extra material in the wrong place could interfere with how comfortably the phone opens and closes.

Apple's own product images show that the titanium hinge remains exposed when the case is installed.

If you're buying a case mainly because you're worried about dropping an expensive foldable phone, you may feel more comfortable with a case that includes dedicated hinge protection. 

Because the front frame has much less material to grip than a traditional one-piece phone case, some foldable cases rely on thin adhesive strips to keep that section securely positioned. 

This isn't necessarily a problem if you install your iPhone Duo phone case once and leave it there. It becomes less convenient if you're someone who swaps cases regularly.

Repeatedly removing a case that relies on adhesive can be more cumbersome than pulling off a traditional flexible iPhone case.

It's something to consider before buying, particularly if you're planning to rotate between several Apple Duo cases.

Built-in MagSafe is useful, but the unusual proportions of a foldable can change how some magnetic accessories sit on the phone.

A MagSafe charger only needs enough space to connect to the magnetic charging area. Wallets are larger and extend farther vertically.

That can make some MagSafe wallets an awkward pairing with the Duo depending on their dimensions and how they sit beside the camera and folding hardware.

If you already own a MagSafe wallet, checking its dimensions against the iPhone Duo before buying would be sensible.

For charging, however, Apple confirms that the official iPhone Duo case supports MagSafe, along with Qi2 25W and Qi-certified wireless chargers.

Apple's case is a strong option, but it isn't automatically the best iPhone Duo case for every type of user.

Some buyers will want more than just a phone cover. Others will want stronger protection or an even slimmer, almost barely there material.

Here are three alternatives worth considering.

Apple’s iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand uses TechWoven fabric instead of polycarbonate and adds an adjustable stand for reading, watching videos, and FaceTime calls. The stand snaps back into place when you’re done.

Built-in magnets support MagSafe, Qi2 25W, and Qi-certified wireless charging.

It’s a practical option if you often use the unfolded display hands-free, but it costs more and adds bulk.

The ThinBorne iPhone Duo case uses 600D aramid fiber and measures just 0.90mm thick. It weighs about 0.76 oz and includes built-in support for MagSafe and Qi2 charging.

That makes it an interesting alternative for anyone specifically searching for an iPhone Duo case thin enough to preserve the original feel of the phone.

Aramid fiber also gives the exterior a textured carbon-fiber-style finish, which can provide additional grip without relying on a thick rubber exterior.

This isn't the option to choose if maximum drop protection is your priority. The appeal is almost the opposite. It gives you a lightweight protective layer while adding as little bulk as possible.

At the other end of the spectrum is the OtterBox Defender Series Pro XT for iPhone Duo.

Unlike Apple's minimalist case, OtterBox specifically extends protection around the Duo's vulnerable hinge. The hinge section moves with the phone and lies flat when the device is opened.

So, is Apple's $79 iPhone Duo case worth it?

Yes, if you want a thin, lightweight case that complements the Duo's minimalist design. You get MagSafe support and a fit designed specifically for Apple's foldable.

However, the hinge remains exposed, and $79 is a considerable price for limited protection. If you want more coverage or extra features, a third-party iPhone Duo case may offer better value.
