For years, foldable phones came with compromises. Some struggled to last a full day on a charge. Others felt too thick and heavy compared to regular smartphones. Many people were also concerned about long-term durability.

That is why the latest foldables caught my attention. Instead of trying to improve everything at once, Motorola, Samsung, and Google each focused on solving a different problem.

Motorola focused on battery life. Samsung focused on making foldables thinner and lighter. Google focused on durability.

The result is that choosing a foldable is becoming less about accepting compromises and more about deciding which improvement matters most to you.

Most foldable phones have traditionally struggled with at least one of these issues:

• Bulk and weight

• Durability concerns

Let's look at how each company approached the problem.

Samsung tackled this issue with the Galaxy Z Fold 7.

Compared to the other two devices, it is both thinner and lighter.

Samsung's effort to reduce thickness is noticeable enough that many early users immediately commented on it after upgrading from older Fold models. 

People worry about dust, water, hinges, and everyday wear.

Google's approach with the Pixel 10 Pro Fold focuses on reducing those concerns.

The phone combines water resistance, dust resistance, a reinforced hinge design, and a durable frame to create a foldable that feels more prepared for everyday use.

If battery life has always been your concern, I'd go with the Motorola Razr Fold. Running out of power has been one of the biggest complaints about foldables for years, and Motorola seems to have taken that criticism personally. 

If you've always liked foldables but hated how thick and heavy they felt, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is the one I'd recommend. It's the closest any foldable has come to feeling like a traditional smartphone when folded, which makes it easier to live with every day.

For me, though, the most interesting option is the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Durability has always been the question hanging over foldables. The dust resistance, bright display, dependable cameras, and everyday practicality make it feel like the foldable I'd worry about the least.

Motorola, Samsung, and Google took different paths, but they arrived at the same destination: fewer compromises. Battery life, bulk, and durability used to be reasons to avoid foldables. Now they're becoming reasons to buy one. Pairing one with a thin phone case helps preserve the portability that modern foldables finally deliver.
