I thought finding a Motorola Razr Fold case would be easy — I was wrong

I assumed finding a Razr Fold case would take about five minutes. Check Motorola's official accessories... Compare a few third-party options... Take some notes and move on. However, that's not what happened.

While researching Motorola Razr Fold accessories, I couldn't find an official case. The list of third-party Motorola Razr Fold case options was shorter than expected, too.

Before long, I was spending less time comparing individual cases and more time trying to understand why so few companies were making them. For a flagship foldable from a major smartphone brand, that wasn't what I expected to find.

What started as a simple accessory search quickly turned into a closer look at the Razr Fold's growing ecosystem.

⚡ Highlights:

I expected to find an official Motorola Razr Fold case, but Motorola doesn't appear to offer one at the moment.

The third-party Motorola Razr Fold case market is smaller than what you'd typically find for an iPhone, Galaxy device, or Samsung foldable.

Several accessory brands appear to be taking a wait-and-see approach as Motorola's first modern book-style foldable establishes itself.

Despite the smaller ecosystem, Razr Fold owners can still find cases with features like magnetic compatibility, slim designs, and hinge protection.

Thinborne's decision to support the Razr Fold reflects a growing belief that the device deserves the same accessory options as other flagship phones.

I expected to find an official Motorola Razr Fold case

The first place I looked was Motorola - which is the obvious starting point. Even if buyers eventually choose a third-party option, manufacturers often release at least one official case.

The absence of an official case wasn't unique to my research. Android Central pointed out the same thing, describing Motorola's Razr Fold case as "missing in action." This immediately changed my approach as I found myself mostly looking at third-party brands.

Maybe Motorola will release an official case later, or maybe it has other priorities. Either way, the absence of a first-party option stood out, as it pushed buyers toward Motorola's third-party accessories from day one.

The third-party market felt smaller than I expected

When researching cases for an iPhone or Galaxy device, you're usually flooded with options. Thin cases, rugged cases, clear cases, leather-style cases, magnetic cases, etc. - sometimes the hardest part is narrowing the list down.

The Motorola Razr Fold experience felt different because of the scarcity of options. There are still options available from companies like FNTCASE and ZITOCASES, along with a growing number of unbranded cases on Amazon.

Normally, researching smartphone cases means jumping between dozens of manufacturers, comparing materials, features, and designs. However, that’s clearly not the case here.

The bigger question has become: why are there very few choices?

Why some brands have stayed on the sidelines

At first, it seemed reasonable to assume foldables were simply too niche-specific. However, Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold lineup has plenty of accessory support, which suggests foldables themselves aren't the main issue.

More research revealed that the difference is that Samsung has spent years building its Fold ecosystem. Therefore, accessory makers already know Galaxy Fold owners buy cases, chargers, mounts, and other accessories.

Even as the broader foldable category continues to grow, the Motorola Razr Fold simply doesn't have that history yet. Its first book-style foldable is also entering a category where demand is hard to predict.

Companies have to decide where to spend development resources, manufacturing capacity, and inventory budgets. For many brands, supporting an iPhone or Galaxy device is an easy decision. A first-generation book-style foldable is a tougher call.

That doesn't mean the Razr Fold isn't worth supporting. It simply helps explain why some companies may have taken a wait-and-see approach.

What should Razr Fold owners look for in a case?

A smaller accessory market means choosing wisely. Looking across the available options, a few features consistently stood out:

  • Magnetic compatibility - Look for built-in magnets if you plan to use magnetic chargers, mounts, wallets, stands, etc.

  • Thickness - One of the Razr Fold's biggest strengths is its design. Choosing a thin case helps preserve that feel.

  • Grip - Foldables are larger and heavier than most smartphones. Using a case with extra texture can make them easier to hold.

  • Materials - Different types of materials offer different trade-offs in weight, feel, and durability. For example, plastics are not as durable as aramid fiber.

  • Protection style - Some cases prioritize hinge protection, while others prioritize staying slim (without hinge protection). Decide which approach fits your needs before choosing one.

The biggest takeaway from my research is that there may be fewer Motorola Razr Fold case options than expected, but there are still good choices available if you know what features matter most to you.

Still, some companies decided the Razr Fold was worth supporting

The good news is that not every company took a wait-and-see approach.

At Thinborne, we experienced similar uncertainty regarding the Razr Fold accessory market. Earlier this year, we shared on X that we hesitated twice before moving forward with a Motorola Razr Fold case after hearing that very few brands planned to support the device.

That experience reflects a broader trend across the current Razr Fold accessory market:

Regardless of market size, Razr Fold owners still need protection, grip, and magnetic compatibility just like owners of any other flagship phone.

That's ultimately why Thinborne decided to support the device with a thin aramid fiber case featuring built-in magnets. At the time of writing, production is already underway, and orders are beginning to ship.

Final Thoughts

I thought finding a Motorola Razr Fold case would be easy. Instead, I found a category that's still taking shape.

The good news is that support already exists, even if the selection isn't as broad as what you'd find for an iPhone, Galaxy device, or Samsung foldable.

Whether you're looking for a rugged design or a thin phone case that preserves the device's feel, the smaller market makes it even more important to choose carefully.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Motorola Razr Fold support MagSafe accessories?

The Motorola Razr Fold doesn't have Apple's MagSafe technology built in, but it can work with many magnetic accessories when paired with a MagSafe case.

Do Motorola Razr Fold cases interfere with wireless charging?

Most modern Razr Fold cases are designed to work with wireless charging. However, very thick cases or magnets that are poorly positioned can sometimes reduce charging efficiency.

Are hinge-protection cases better for foldables?

Not necessarily. Hinge-protection cases offer additional coverage for one of the phone's most exposed areas, but they also tend to add more bulk. Some users prefer the extra protection, while others prioritize a slimmer design.

Is a screen protector necessary if I use a Motorola Razr Fold case?

A case helps protect the phone's frame and back, but it doesn't always protect the cover display. Many Razr Fold owners choose to pair a case with a screen protector for additional protection against scratches and everyday wear.
