I compared thin, clear, and rugged iPhone 17 Pro cases — here's my favorite

Most people shopping for an ultra thin iPhone 17 Pro case assume they're giving up too much protection. This is a common assumption, especially since rugged cases are known for serious drop protection.

To see how much that assumption still holds up, I compared three cases with very different approaches: the thin Thinborne iPhone 17 Pro case, Apple's clear Case, and the OtterBox Defender series. To keep the comparison grounded, I used these products as reference points for the ultra-thin, clear, and rugged categories.

On paper, the rugged option seemed like the obvious winner. However, the comparison turned out to be more complicated. Protection mattered, but comfort and MagSafe performance also played a part in the overall experience.

The iPhone 17 Pro is already a large device. Add a case, and the experience quickly changes. An ultra thin iPhone 17 Pro case, such as Thinborne, comes closest to preserving the phone’s original feel. 

Clear cases like Apple's official case sit in the middle. They let you enjoy your phone's design while adding some protection. The trade-off is that fingerprints and dust can become more visible after some time.

Rugged cases such as the OtterBox Defender create the biggest transformation. The added thickness provides drop protection, but it also makes the phone feel larger in your hand (and pocket).

So while it’s true that protection matters, so does how the phone feels when you’re actually using it:

Many super-thin cases protected against scuffs but offered little else. That's part of the reason thin cases developed a reputation for being all about looks.

However, today’s options are stronger as reputable brands invest in research, materials, and quality control. So in the end, you get a higher-quality case than you would with a budget case, which is a worthy investment.

That's where the comparison became more interesting.

Ultra-thin cases generally provide enough protection from scratches, pocket wear, desk drops, and everyday accidents. Clear cases add a bit more cushioning, often without significantly increasing bulk. Rugged cases still lead in harder impacts, reinforced corners, and demanding environments.

Therefore, the real question isn't whether an ultra thin iPhone 17 Pro case offers protection - it's whether the additional protection of a thicker case is worth carrying every day. 

After comparing the Thinborne case, Apple's clear Case, and the OtterBox rugged Defender series, it became clear that each type succeeds for a different reason. 

After comparing these three, two stood out for different reasons.

For preserving the original feel of the iPhone 17 Pro, the Thinborne ultra-thin case was my favorite. It adds very little bulk, works well with MagSafe accessories, and keeps the phone comfortable to carry every day.

Apple's clear case earned a spot for a different reason. If you've spent good money on an iPhone color you genuinely enjoy, it's hard to ignore the appeal of a case that lets you see it. Therefore, it strikes a balance between appearance and protection.

The OtterBox Defender remains the logical choice for people who prioritize maximum protection. If you work outdoors or regularly expose your phone to harsher conditions, the extra bulk can be a worthwhile trade-off.

For my own preferences, I'd lean toward the Thinborne and Apple clear case. One preserves the phone's feel, while the other preserves its appearance.

At first, I thought a rugged case would be my favorite. More protection should make for a better case, right?

Instead, what became clear is that the best case depends on what you value most. The OtterBox Defender offers the most protection, Apple's clear case does the best job of showcasing the phone's design, and the Thinborne Ultra thin iPhone 17 Pro case comes closest to preserving the phone’s original feel.

That's why there isn't a universal winner here, as each approach solves a different problem.

For my own preferences, I kept coming back to the Thinborne case and Apple's clear case. One preserves the feel of the phone, while the other preserves its appearance. If those qualities matter more to you than maximum drop protection, a thin phone case may offer the most practical balance between protection and everyday usability.
