The Samsung Flip line could end with the Galaxy Z Flip 8 — 6 reasons I'd still buy it

If you look into it enough, this rumor leaves some room for interpretation. It's still far too early to treat the rumor as fact, and Samsung hasn't hinted at discontinuing the Flip series just yet. If anything, product roadmaps can change throughout development.

I can imagine several futures out of this rumor. For instance, Samsung could eventually rename the series or introduce a new foldable concept or reposition its compact foldable under a different product family to better compete with whatever Apple and other brands bring to market.

Walking away from the clamshell form factor altogether would leave a noticeable gap in its portfolio—especially with competitors continuing to invest in flip phones and more brands exploring foldables.

However, if the Galaxy Z Flip 8 really ends up being the last model in the series, it would mark a significant shift for Samsung, considering the Flip lineup helped bring foldable phones into the mainstream. Its compact design appealed to users who wanted something different from the typical slab smartphone.

Last in the line or not, here are the reasons why I think the Galaxy Z Flip 8 is still worth buying.

Foldable phones are expensive, but there's still a noticeable gap between Samsung's two foldable families.

The Galaxy Z Flip 8 is also the more practical buy for most people. It starts at $1,1999, while the Galaxy Z Fold 8 starts at $1,899—a $700 difference.

Unless you specifically need a tablet-sized screen for multitasking or productivity, the Flip 8 gives you many of the same flagship features for much less. You still get a premium foldable design, Galaxy AI, a flagship processor, and a large 6.9-inch AMOLED display—all in a compact form factor that easily fits in your pocket.

If Samsung eventually focuses entirely on the Fold lineup, future buyers may lose this more affordable entry point into Galaxy foldables, which makes the Flip 8 feel even more appealing today.

If the rumor turns out to be true, it doesn't make the Z Flip 8 a bad purchase overnight. Samsung has a strong software support policy for its flagship devices, so owners should continue receiving Android and security updates for years.

That means owners can continue receiving:

• Major Android updates

• One UI feature improvements

• Security patches

• AI feature enhancements where supported

In some ways, owning the final model of a mature product line could even mean getting Samsung's most refined version of the Flip after years of incremental improvements.

Of course, until Samsung confirms anything, that's purely speculative—the phone should be judged on what it offers today, not on rumors about tomorrow.

Samsung's ecosystem is another reason to consider the Flip 8. If you already own Galaxy Buds, a Galaxy Watch, Tab, or Book, the phone integrates with them out of the box through features like Auto Switch, Quick Share, Multi Control, and Wireless PowerShare.

Samsung also offers first-party accessories such as phone cases, fast chargers, and wireless chargers. Additionally, the broader accessory market includes hundreds of third-party alternatives, giving you far more options than most foldable phones.

Fortunately, the Flip 8 also has excellent support for MagSafe-style accessories through a compatible Galaxy Z Flip 8 case, since Samsung still relies on cases to add the magnetic ring rather than building the magnets directly into the phone.

• I like being able to fold the phone closed after ending a call because it feels intentional and satisfying.

• I appreciate placing it halfway open on a table for hands-free video calls without needing a separate stand.

• When taking group photos or recording quick videos, Flex Mode makes it easy to position the phone almost anywhere.

• The compact, folded shape also feels more secure when carrying it around. It slips into smaller bags, jacket pockets, or even gym shorts much more comfortably than many traditional flagship phones.

There's also something refreshing about owning a phone that still feels a little different from everything else in people's pockets.

Lastly, you can trust this year’s Samsung flip to have improved durability. The Z Flip 8 features:
